A Day in the Life of a Costume Designer

We asked Candice Cain, Costume Shop Director at CTG, to talk about her experiences – including advice on whopee cushions. Here’s what she shared:

Can you give us a little background on your life and how you ended up at CTG?
I’ve been the Costume Director at CTG for 17 years. I arrived in 1993 after I left artistic homes I had for years at Virginia Stage Company and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I had been freelancing for about 1 1/2 years out of college and I thought “not for me, I want an artistic home.” Continue reading


Happy New Year from our Sherwood Awardee

Happy New Year.

I had an amazing Holiday. Early in December, I attended Sage Lewis’ piece “Far Away” at the Broad Stage and that began the seasons’ genuine tone of beauty and unity for me.  It was truly moving and prolific.  After Christmas, I went on vacation with my family.  To be honest with you all, “Down Time” is a relatively new feature for me. I’ve never been known to be good at it. Until recently.  I spent the majority of my time with my husband and two lovely girls snuggling and playing board games (Dix It and Banana Grams are my current fav’z). I consumed tons of delicious food and spirits with good friends. Continue reading


Meet costume designer Ann Closs-Farley

Every year, Center Theatre Group chooses one emerging artist and honors them with the Sherwood Award. The 2010 Sherwood Awardee is costumer designer Ann Closs-Farley.  It’s been a very exciting year for Ann.  Check out her first message to the Green Room:
